A year after being curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, Halloween is expected to make a big comeback this year – no doubt accompanied by perennial debates about offensive costumes, cultural appropriation, and the excesses of cancel culture and political correctness.

As polarizing as these debates have become, they still provide educators with an invaluable opportunity to explore how stereotypes actually work, and why they matter.
