digital licensing
Thank you for your interest in MEF’s digital licensing!
MEF currently offers three different types of digital licenses: 3-year license, perpetuity license, and 7-day streaming rental.
3-Year License:
Host on Your Server and Students/Faculty Can Access At Any Time
When you choose this option:
- We send you MP4 files of the film(s) you license.
- You store digital copies of the programs on a secure, password-protected server.
- You are licensed to stream the programs to multiple users in multiple locations (a video-on-demand environment) on one geographical site (i.e. a single campus).
- The cost of a 3-year streaming license is equivalent to the cost of the DVD of a given title.
- Discounts are available for schools that already own a DVD copy of the film or for schools that purchase a digital license together with a DVD. For more information about this license and/or discounted pricing options, please call 1.800.897.0089 x2201.
- The process for purchasing a 3-year license is quick, easy, and available online for logged in Colleges/Universities. Please see below for details.
Perpetuity License: Purchase Streaming Rights for the Life of the Format
When you choose this option, you get the same benefits as you get with the 3-year license, plus:
- You never have to renew your license! As long as this format lasts, your school will own the rights to stream the film.
- In perpetuity rights are available for most, but not all, films distributed by MEF. Click here for a list of available of titles.
- Rights in perpetuity are the price of the DVD times two.
- Discounts are available for schools that already own a DVD copy of the film or for schools that purchase a digital license together with a DVD.
- At this time, all orders for perpetuity licenses must be placed over the phone. Please call 800.897.0089 x2205 with questions or to place an order.
One-time Streaming Rental: We’ll Host the Streaming of a Film for 7 Days on Our Server
- This option follows a live-streaming format and allows you to stream the program to multiple users for a scheduled one week period.
- Users will be provided with a login and password that they can in turn share with students.
- This license costs $50 per film.
- To order a digital rental, please call 1.800.897.0089 or e-mail info@mediaed.org. Please note that a minimum 24-hr. advance notice is required for digital rentals. (Rentals for Monday must be requested by 10 AM on Friday.)
Colleges & Universities may now purchase an asynchronous digital license online! Simply follow the steps below. (If you are not a College/University and you are interested in digital licensing, please call 1.800.897.0089 or e-mail info@mediaed.org to discuss your options.)
1. Register for an account at the College/University licensing level.
2. Go to the page for the video for which you wish to purchase a digital license.
3. Under “Digital Licensing” click on Terms/Conditions and review.
4. Check the box next to “I Agree to Terms/Conditions.”
5. Click on the “Add to Cart” button.
6. When you checkout, enter a credit card number. Digital licenses can be purchased online only when you pay with a credit card.
7. You will be provided with a link that you can use to download an mpeg-4 file. You will have access to this link after checkout, and it will also be e-mailed to the e-mail address associated with your account. You must download the file within 24 hours of purchase or the link will no longer be valid. If this happens, please contact our front office at 1.800.897.0089.
8. Download the file. The files can be copied onto a MAC or PC for conversion into a streaming format. The files have been tested on RealPlayer, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player (Flash and other formats have not yet been tested).
The MPEG – 4 files are:
- Large Progressive scan MPEG – 4; optimized for online streaming
- 4Mb/sec Target with 7Mb/sec Max
- De-Interlaced Signal
- Optimized for broadband streaming as well as 56k modem streaming
- On average, 150 MB – 500 MB sized files
