Summary:
This award-winning documentary links everyday black men from various socioeconomic backgrounds with some of Black America's most progressive academics, social critics and authors to provide an engaging, candid dialogue on black masculine identity in American culture. Featuring interviews with authors bell hooks, Michael Eric Dyson, Kevin Powell, the late historian John Henrick Clark, sociologist Gail Dines, musician M.C. Hammer, Richard Majors, author of Cool Pose, activist and social critic Jackson Katz, Andrew Young, former mayor of Atlanta, Corliss Hill, editor of Essence magazine, and psychiatrist Dr. Alvin Poussaint.

Biographical Summary:
Byron Hurt has a diverse background in the media, with work experience in broadcast television, print, public relations, and long-form documentary. In Boston, MA, Hurt worked for three major local affiliates, WBZ-TV, WHDH-TV, and WCVB-TV. He was a reporter for The Patriot Ledger and worked as a media relations specialist at Northeastern University. In New York City, Hurt worked as a production assistant for Stanley Nelson's American Experience PBS documentary, Marcus Garvey: Look For Me in the Whirlwind.
Hurt is also the associate director of Mentors in Violence Prevention-Marine Corps (MVP-MC). Founded in 1996, MVP-MC is the first system-wide gender violence prevention program in the history of the United States military. Hurt was one of the original members of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) staff at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. The MVP Program, created in 1993 by Jackson Katz, is designed to inspire greater male participation in the effort to reduce men's violence against women, and to encourage men to speak out against rape and all forms of gender violence.
