Summary:

This series consists of the following four videos:

>>> Off the Straight & Narrow: Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals & Television, 1967-1998 -- This video provides a political and cultural analysis of television's representation of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.

>>> Further Off the Straight & Narrow: New Gay Visibility on Television, 1998-2006 -- Picking up where critically acclaimed Off the Straight & Narrow (1998) left off, this film examines the increasing presence of GLBT characters on sitcoms, reality shows, and premium cable programming. It takes account of the variety and complexity of GLBT representations, while exploring how these representations continue to be shaped by the demands of the commercial media system.

ONLY AVAILABLE ON DVD

>>> Speak Up!: Improving the Lives of GLBT Youth -- This video challenges the discrimination, harassment, and violence that result from homophobia -- breaking the silence surrounding issues of sexual identity, and inspiring students to speak up against injustice and change the climate of their schools.

>>> Playing Unfair: The Media Image of the Female Athlete -- This video provides an in-depth critique of the sexism and homophobia that pervade media representations of female athletes. Sports media scholars Mary Jo Kane, Pat Griffin, and Michael Messner examine the disparity betweent he success of female athletes and sprots journalism's often trivialized and (hetero)sexualized coverage of them.
