Seventeen years since its founding, the Media Education Foundation (MEF) is one of the nation's leading producers and distributors of videos and DVDs designed to examine commercial media and their impact on American culture, politics, and identity. MEF documentaries are seen by students, educators, grassroots organizers, healthcare professionals, and parents, used as tools to analyze crucial issues that seldom, if ever, are highlighted in mainstream media. These issues range from how media shape our perceptions of race, class and gender, to how the commercialization of media limits political discussion and simultaneously undermines informed democratic participation.
Now more than ever, we remain committed to pressing forward with our founding mission. We remain convinced that providing a wide cross-section of people with access to independent, critical analysis of 21st-century media technologies and content is vital. We are energized by our primary goals: to empower citizens with alternative media resources, and to inspire critical awareness of the media forms and content that shape our daily lives. These goals are essential in awakening democratic engagement in an increasingly media driven society.
We have received countless notes of thanks from a multitude of people using our films, and are grateful for their encouragement and support. Now, as we look to our future, we hope that those of you who are familiar with MEF's work will also consider becoming donors to the Media Education Foundation.
In the past two years, we have released eleven films, with three more coming Spring 2008. Your gift will help us produce, market, and distribute these documentary films to new audiences, in diverse theatrical and community venues, here and around the world.
